2024-25 European Champions Cup outright winner predictions

There are familiar names at the top of the betting in this season’s European Champions Cup but the value may lie in backing a new name to appear on the roll of honour.

Holders and six-time winners Toulouse are 15-8 favourites while Leinster, who have the second-best record with four titles, are 11-4 and it’s 8-1 bar that illustrious pair.

Toulouse are flying in their domestic league, France’s Top 14, and have a star-studded squad, while Leinster are doing their usual job of dominating the United Rugby Championship regular season with seven wins from seven.

Both teams have daunting tournament records – Leinster have won 30 of the 31 pool matches they have played over the last sevens seasons, with their sole loss coming by one point in Toulouse, while the French side have won their last 16 home matches in Europe.

The key to this tournament is getting as high a seeding as possible after the group stage to ensure home advantage through the knockout rounds, and that is what both teams did last season before reaching the final, which Toulouse won in extra-time.

It might not be so easy this time for the French outfit who face a trip to play the Sharks in Durban in round three while Leinster have to play the Premiership’s top two Bristol and Bath as well as a trip to La Rochelle, their conquerors in back-to-back finals.

La Rochelle are third in the betting alongside another French side Bordeaux, who sit second in the Top 14 with eight wins from 11.

Big guns Toulouse and Leinster are odds-on to win their pools but pools three and four are more open and could offer the best outright value.

Pool three houses three former winners in Saracens, Munster and Northampton but South African outfit the Bulls are favourites and look to have a good chance of gaining a high seeding that can set them up for a run to the final.

They made the final of the United Rugby Championship last season, beating Leinster in the semis, and are third this season with just one defeat – by one point at Scarlets – after six matches.

Last season in Europe they won three of their four pool games – again their sole defeat came by one point in Lyon – but fielded a weakened team in the quarter-final at Northampton.

The Bulls start their campaign at Saracens tomorrow having won at Connacht in the URC last weekend, and next up face Northampton at home – both of those opponents go into European action with a record of three defeats in their last four Premiership matches.

The team who beat the Bulls in that URC final last season were Glasgow Warriors, and they head the betting to top pool four, the most open of all the sections.

They have to face French heavyweights Racing and Toulon, but they beat Toulon comfortably 29-5 at home last season and also won in Bayonne as they progressed to the knockout stage where they lost 28-24 at Harlequins.

Premiership duo Sale and Quins complete their schedule – Glasgow avoid facing fellow URC side the Stormers – and the Warriors can do enough to earn a home tie and outrun generous odds of 33-1.

The Premiership challenge is headed by Saracens, whose league form has taken a dip, and table-toppers Bath, who face La Rochelle at home first up and close with a trip to face Leinster in Dublin.
