Political neutrality is the most important requirement for the governor of the Bank of Latvia, said Finance Latvia Association board member Jānis Brazovskis in an interview to Latvijas Radio.
He said it is very important for a politically neutral professional with good reputation to become governor of the Bank of Latvia. This person’s reputation also needs to be internationally recognised. “It’s clear that political neutrality is the most important factor,” he added.
The representative also mentioned that the financial sector, similarly to how the European Central Bank put it, expects broader, more analytical and more comprehensive approaches to addressing and analysing various economic issues from the Bank of Latvia. “I believe we can do better here,” said Brazovskis.
He also mentioned that the Bank of Latvia, as any central bank, is charged with the ungrateful task of being the “transformer between the financial sector, society and politicians, balancing all interests in the process”.
Mārtiņš Kazāks is the current Governor of the Bank of Latvia. However, his term will end at the end of December. He was appointed to this post by the Saeima on the 12th of December 2019 for a five-year term.
Kazāks has confirmed he would agree for another term. However, there is neither a lot of opposition nor support among politicians for this.
Saeima deputies have until the 10th of December to propose candidates.
The Union of Greens and Farmers, for example, has proposed “Altum” financial institution’s Chairman Reinis Bērziņš. New Unity and Unity, on the other hand, will decide on their candidates on Monday.
Opposition party “For Stability!” proposes Pāvels Kuzmins for the post. According to the party, he is an experienced financier.
