For the second year in a row, Finland has been ranked eighth-best in an EU comparison on gender equality.

Developed by the European Institute for Gender Equality, the Gender Equality Index examined domains including the labour market, healthcare and the exercise of power.

Finland’s score of 74.5 points this year had only slightly increased since 2021, the institute noted. Last year, Finland’s gender equality ranking dropped to eighth place, after ranking fourth in 2022.

Finland’s scores rose in the areas of work and power, while there was also improvement in terms of social power. The Nordic country’s worst gender equality scores were in the educational attainment and participation categories.

According to the comparison, around 38 percent of women and nine percent of men in Finland were employed in the education-, social- and health sectors.

The institute noted that Finland’s gender gap in those sectors was among the widest in the EU.

Meanwhile, the countries that fared better than Finland in the rankings this year included Sweden (82 points), Denmark (78.8), the Netherlands (78.8), Spain (76.7), Belgium (76.1), France (76.1) and Luxembourg (75.4).

The index aims to reveal areas that need improvement and “ultimately supports policy makers to design more effective gender equality measures”, according to the institute.

This year’s index was the ninth iteration of the comparison, the first of which was published in 2013.
