The Portuguese island of Madeira has once again been chosen as the best place to visit for New Year’s Eve by professional travel organisation, European Best Destinations. The travel experts polled a panel of 102,398 travelers, who selected their favorite spots from the luxurious and sunny, to the refined and cultural.

New to the top rankings, is Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in the third spot, often dubbed the European capital of wine. It’s no surprise that Vienna with its timeless elegance is on the list as is Fuerteventura (number six) for golden beaches and a warm escape under the winter sun. The vibrant Batumi, (number five) Georgia, sometimes referred to as the “new Barcelona,” has captivated travelers with its excellent offer of shopping, wellness, culture and gastronomy.

With one of the best New Year’s Eve fireworks in the world, it’s no surprise that Madeira is once again number one. Often referred to as the European Hawaii, this stunning destination offers breathtaking landscapes, authentic markets and exquisite wines. The island is a paradise for hiking along the “levadas” in its lush primary forests, uncovering hidden gems like the Valley of the Nuns, or enjoying the natural pools of Porto Moniz and Seixal. embarking on a catamaran to spot dolphins. Christmas and New Year are celebrated with great enthusiasm here, with significant budgets allocated to transform December into a joyous festival.
