The European Union is set to impose sanctions on over a dozen individuals and three entities in its first round of measures aimed at countering Russia’s disinformation campaigns and other hybrid activities.

Details: According to a draft seen by Bloomberg, the proposed sanctions will target several Russian intelligence officers and groups, governmental officials and media entrepreneurs.
The restrictions are part of a new sanctions framework established earlier this year, aimed at countering disinformation campaigns and other destabilising activities worldwide that are financed by Russia.
The EU is also considering additional sanctions against Belarus, targeting approximately two dozen individuals accused of human rights violations or of benefiting materially from their ties to the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, the self-declared President of Belarus.
EU foreign ministers are expected to approve these packages at a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
Background:
On Wednesday, EU ambassadors agreed upon the 15th package of sanctions in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
The proposals for the 15th sanctions package, prepared by the European Commission for EU member states, include the addition of 29 legal entities and 54 individuals to the sanctions list.
For the first time, companies from China are expected to be included on the sanctions list in response to reports of their support for military production in Russia.
New measures to combat Russia’s shadow fleet, which bypasses the price cap on oil transported by sea, are also under consideration. As part of these efforts, 48 tankers may be blacklisted.
