The Saints were thrashed 5-0 at home by Tottenham, with all five goals being scored in the first half.
It was Southampton’s 13th defeat from 16 Premier League matches, during which time they have picked up only one win.
They have just five points and are nine adrift of safety, with relegation therefore looking like an increasingly probable prospect.
Southampton U21s manager Simon Rusk is in interim charge and set to take to the dugout on Wednesday night for their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at home against Liverpool, live on talkSPORT 2.
