German and French turmoil shows European fragility

Both Germany and France have been through political turmoil in the past week. French parliamentarians ousted Michel Barnier as Prime Minister after a vote of no confidence. Now center-left politician François Bayrou is in the role, but his position is incredibly tenuous.

In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz also lost a confidence vote, triggering a snap election as the uneasy coalition he headed collapsed.

These fragile leadership moments come at a strange time for Europe. Many leaders are apprehensive or excited about the return of an emboldened President-elect Donald Trump to the White House, while the ongoing conflicts in both Gaza and Ukraine are causing concern.

For more on what the situation in Germany and wider Europe is as the continent enters 2025, Here & Now’s Peter O’Dowd talks with Deborah Cole, Berlin correspondent for the Guardian.

This segment airs on December 18, 2024. Audio will be available after the broadcast.
