The Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa: FAP) is the launch customer for the NATO-standard Embraer A-29N Super Tucano multirole turboprop aircraft.

A contract for 12 aircraft was signed between the FAP and the Brazilian manufacturer on 16 December.

Valued at nearly EUR200 million (USD210 million), the deal also includes a flight simulator and equipment and services for logistics sustainment, the Ministry of National Defence (MND) said.

No information was disclosed on the delivery schedule. Once in service, the fleet will carry out close air protection, advanced pilot training, and reconnaissance and surveillance missions.

The acquisition of the Brazilian-made aircraft is part of the FAP’s 2024–2030 Transformation of National Aerospace Power plan, dubbed the Força Aérea 5.3. In November 2023 the then Director of Programs and Engineering Directorate and now Director of the Weapon Systems Maintenance Directorate Major General João Rui Ramos Nogueira told
Janes
that between 8 and 12 close air support aircraft would be purchased by 2025.

The project will involve participation from the Portuguese industry to configure the aircraft to NATO standards and specifications. Portugal’s OGMA – Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal, which is owned by Embraer, will service the aircraft. NATO-grade equipment, such as tactical datalink and identification friend-or-foe (IFF) system, will be added to the aircraft in Portugal. The Engineering and Product Development Centre (CEiiA), Empordef Tecnologias de Informação (ETI), and GMV Portugal will also play a role in the contract.
