Michelin has finally awarded stars in Serbia. One restaurant in Belgrade and another in Novi Slankamen received this prestigious recognition. Both establishments fall into the contemporary cuisine category, and we’ve made an effort to give you a closer look at them.
Chinese cars are gaining popularity in Serbia. Currently, models from several Chinese companies, including Geely, Cherry, MG, Lynk & Co, Great Wall, and more recently, Farizon (a brand of electric delivery vehicles), are being imported. The number of buyers for these cars has more than doubled compared to last year.
We’ve also investigated which Serbian companies receive subsidies for job creation and in what amounts. Most state incentives are granted to businesses investing in hotels. Additionally, we’ve calculated how much a subsidised housing loan will cost young people.
Here are five key things you need to know today:
The growing import of Chinese vehicles in Serbia
Chinese cars have penetrated Europe, challenging its auto industry, and Serbia has not been left out. The country currently imports models from several Chinese manufacturers.
According to the Serbian Association of Importers and Dealers, 340 new Chinese-made passenger vehicles were sold in Serbia last year. In 2024, as of 30 November, 828 new passenger vehicles and 109 new light commercial vehicles of Chinese origin have been sold. The price range for models such as Geely and Lynk & Co varies from €25,000 to €40,000, depending on the model and features.
Serbia now has Michelin-starred restaurants
Michelin has awarded its stars in Serbia for the first time, recognising the restaurant Langouste in central Belgrade and Fleur De Sel in the heart of Vojvodina, Novi Slankamen.
This finally addresses the question of why Serbia, unlike neighbouring countries such as Croatia and Slovenia, has not previously received a Michelin star from this prestigious guide. Interestingly, two of the restaurants Michelin has highlighted (both with stars and recommendations) are either part of or closely linked to wineries, with winemaking as their primary business.
Which local businesses receive government support and why
While foreign companies have received over €1 billion in subsidies from the Serbian government since 2006, domestic businesses had to wait more than a decade for their first incentives, which are significantly smaller in scale. Over the past nine years, more than 80 domestic companies have signed agreements with the government, securing subsidies worth €118.9 million for job creation, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.
The disparity stems from domestic investors’ inability to meet investment obligations within the stipulated timeframe, lack of capital, and insufficient bank guarantees. Despite being legally equal, foreign investors often enjoy preferential treatment.
The most significant agreements were made with companies such as Elix Prahovo, Trinity Park d.o.o. Novi Sad, and As-Braća Stanković. Further details on this list can be found via the provided link.
How much will subsidised housing loans cost young people?
State-subsidised housing loans aim to help young people aged 20 to 35 purchase their first homes with just a 1% deposit. Although the smaller deposit (compared to the standard 20%) will result in higher total costs due to a larger loan base, these loans benefit from state subsidies, which cover a significant portion of the increased costs.
Bloomberg Adria has calculated the cost of purchasing a flat using a €75,000 subsidised loan. Assuming a fixed interest rate of 4.5%—slightly below the current market average—the total amount paid by borrowers remains comparable to traditional loans. However, the added advantage of state subsidies for young people makes this option more financially accessible.
