The EU Commission has reached a decision on a complaint from Sanoma Media Finland about Yle’s online streaming platform, Yle Areena, and educational content produced by Yle.

Sanoma had argued the public broadcaster’s streaming service and educational content represented unfair state support, and was an illegal distortion of the market.

The EU has now ruled that Yle’s funding is entirely in line with EU rules on state support for businesses, and has not required any changes to Finnish law.

Sanoma Media Finland, which publishes Helsingin Sanomat among other media, originally filed the complaint in 2021.

The firm is Finland’s biggest media company based on turnover, and also owns a subsidiary producing educational content.

The Finnish state argued in its response to the complaint that Sanoma had misinterpreted Yle’s activities. In addition, Yle Areena and Yle’s educational content represent a key part of Yle’s public service remit.
