After winning several orders in Europe for its KC-390/C-390 military airlifter, Embraer has opened a regional office in Lisbon. Above, is shown a Portuguese Air Force KC-390. Portugal is Embraer’s biggest European customer. (Embraer )

Brazilian defence firm Embraer Defesa & Segurança formally established its first regional office in Europe in Lisbon, Portugal, on 17 December, looking to further increase sales on the continent.

Embraer Defense Europe will seek to sell Embraer Defesa & Segurança defence and security solutions to European armed forces and strengthen the company’s presence in the region.

The Portugal office will host a dedicated team specialised in programme management, support, and engineering to provide solutions tailored to customers, the company said.

The volume of sales logged in recent years in Europe, principally for the KC-390/C-390 Millennium multimission transport aircraft, and prospects for further sales of the airlifter and a new maritime patrol version created the need for the office.

Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, and the Netherlands have ordered a total of 13 C-390 Millennium aircraft.

Slovakia signed a letter of intent (LOI) for three C-390 Millenniums earlier this month, with formal procurement scheduled to begin in January,
Janes
reported on 13 December.

Sweden has also signalled interest in acquiring the aircraft to replace its ageing C-130H Hercules fleet, according to a LOI signed on 9 November.

Portugal is Embraer’s biggest customer in Europe, ordering five KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft in August 2019 and 12 A-29N Super Tucano lightweight multirole turboprop aircraft earlier in December. The contracts combined, including aircraft and related equipment and services, are worth more than EUR1.1 billion (USD1.14 billion).
