By the end of the decade, Luxembourg’s energy transition will require private and public investment totalling €8.5 billion, the energy and environment ministries said in response to a parliamentary question on Thursday.

ADR deputy Jeff Engelen wanted to know from the government whether the electricity grid was adequately prepared for the energy transition and the additional loads caused by e-cars and renewable energies. The outage statistics for electricity customers in Luxembourg are among the lowest in Europe and the world, the ministries said in their response.

The electricity grid will be expanded to keep pace with future demand, but in order to “avoid unnecessary costs, the network will only be expanded as far as necessary,” the ministries said, referring to the grid development plan published by Creos in March 2024.

The document lists investment projects totalling €350 million until 2034, plus a requirement of 100 to 145 million euros in the distribution grid, which the Commissaire du Gouvernement à l’Energie has announced.

The ministers emphasised that the investments will have a positive impact on economic activity in the country. According to Statec estimates, the gross domestic product will be 1% higher than in the scenario without these investments.
