Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It was, briefly, occupied by the United States in World War Two after Denmark was overrun by Nazi Germany. That ended in 1945. Changes continued in Greenland’s status and it was granted home rule in 1979.
It remains strategically important in the Atlantic and it’s also the site of the Pituffik US space base.
Not much chance of a US visit to the King of Denmark’s royal palace as the Greenland issue is raised again
This isn’t the first time that Donald Trump has talked about taking over Greenland. In 2019, during his first presidency, he floated the idea of buying it but was roundly rebuffed by authorities in Denmark and Greenland. As a consequence of the public spat that ensued, he cancelled a planned trip to Copenhagen.
Now, it seems, King Frederik and Queen Mary might not be making any immediate plans to throw open the doors of the Amalienborg Palace to the incoming US President as Greenland might be making him see red.
