In April, the Danish Royal Court shared the first official portraits of King Frederik and Queen Mary. And for Queen Mary, this was her first chance to wear the Danish Crown Jewels.

Mary’s velvet emerald green dressed, sewn by one of her favourite designers, Birgit Hallstein, paired perfectly with the emerald crown jewels, reserved only for queens. Queen Mary chose to wear the Emerald Parure for her first gala portraits, wearing the tiara, the necklace and the ring attached to the set.

The Danish Crown Jewels were designed by Carl Martin Weisshaupt in 1840 and were inspired by French court jewellery.

In addition, Queen Mary wore her Order of the Elephant regalia and became the first member of the Danish Royal Family to wear King Frederik’s Royal Family Order.

Checkered Queen in Norway Kongehuset

On the second day of the State Visit to Norway, Queen Mary wore several outfits, but what stands out in my mind is the blue-and-ivory checked outfit she wore in the afternoon for a meeting with the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and a subsequent luncheon.

Queen Mary’s classic ivory and blue checked Emilia Wickstead pencil skirt paired perfectly with her dark blue Jesper Hovring wrap blouse. She would sport the skirt again in Germany later in the year, at the anniversary of the Nordic Ambassy Complex.

Queen Mary took Paris by storm earlier this summer for the Olympic Games. Cheering on the Danish athletes and attending official functions gave her many occasions to diplomatically dress in her country’s colours of red and white, but perhaps the most sartorially pleasing was the Max Mara jumpsuit she wore to an official reception and then to open the Danish Olympic Pavilion.

In October, Queen Mary visited Brazil and during a trip to the Amazon Rainforest, she wore her heart on her sleeves, literally, in a puff sleeved Sandro maxi dress.

When Queen Mary and her family visited Greenland over the summer, their first visit since the change in throne, the royal sported a variety of cooler weather clothing and national outfits, but it was this polar bear brooch that caught my eye.

For the Icelandic State Visit to Denmark in early October, Queen Mary brought out the Pearl Poire Tiara for the first time—a tiara reserved for queens. Her gown for the State Banquet brought together two midnight blue staples of her wardrobe: a Jesper Hovring asymmetrical neckline top and an Oscar de la Renta tiered, ruffled skirt; but the real star was the peal tiara.

No Clowning Around! Kongehuset Instagram still/ fair use

You didn’t think we’d not include Queen Mary’s visit to the Danish Hospital Clowns Conference in early November, did you? The headline practically writes itself! It’s a serious subject, to be sure, but the use of humour and laughter to help children feel better is proven and we can’t help but wonder if the bold patterned Erdem blouse—complete with long, flourishing sleeves—added to the overall fun of clowning.

The Rose Gold Queen Kongehuset

Not to be outdone by sporting other bits of the Crown Jewels this year, Queen Mary ended the year’s slate of State Visits with another spectacular tiara appearance. At December’s State Banquet for the President of Egypt, Queen Mary brought out a newly-created Rose-Cut Diamond Bandeau Tiara made up of Crown Jewels and adapted for the times.

She started the year as a Crown Princess but ended as a queen creating her own Crown Jewels. That’s a 2024 to look back on.
