Belgium to become first EU country to ban disposable vapes

Belgium will ban the sale of disposable vapes starting January 1, 2024, due to health and environmental concerns.

Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke explained that disposable e-cigarettes, which often contain nicotine, have become a growing health threat, especially among teenagers, by making it easier for them to get addicted.

He also highlighted the environmental impact, as these products contribute to plastic waste, hazardous chemicals, and battery pollution.

Vandenbroucke emphasized that reusable vapes could serve as a tool to help people quit smoking, which is why the ban targets disposables specifically.

Belgium is the first EU country to implement such a ban, following Australia’s similar move earlier this year as Vandenbroucke called on the European Commission to update tobacco legislation in response.

While the ban is expected to impact the vape industry financially, some shops, including Brussels Vapotheque, have expressed support, citing alternatives like rechargeable pod systems that are more eco-friendly.
