Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has described Slovakia’s threats to halt electricity supplies to Ukraine as unacceptable.

Source: Estonian media outlet Postimees, as cited by European Pravda

Details: Tsahkna reminded that the European Union has committed to fully phasing out imports of Russian fossil fuel by 2027.

Quote: “The recent efforts by the governments of Hungary and Slovakia to prolong the supply of Russian gas to the European Union contradict this goal, as they only deepen energy dependence on Russia.”

Details: The minister added that the European Commission has confirmed that the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine will not impact the energy security of the European Union or its member states.

Quote: “Eliminating energy dependence on Russia is in the interest of every state, as Russia has a history of weaponising its energy exports. Russia cannot be considered a reliable partner,” the minister stated.

More details: Tsahkna also mentioned that Russia is threatening to cut off gas supplies to Transnistria and leave the residents without electricity and heating from 1 January, demonstrating its true nature.

Quote: “Given all this, it is absolutely unacceptable for Slovakia to threaten to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine this winter. Ukraine has been fighting not only for its sovereignty but also for the security of all Europe and the world for nearly three years now. In this situation, the only correct approach is comprehensive support for Ukraine, not increasing the suffering of Ukrainians with such actions.”

Background:

Among these measures, the Slovak prime minister mentioned the possibility of halting electricity supplies to Ukraine.

In response to Fico’s threats, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked: “It seems Putin has tasked Fico with opening a second energy front against Ukraine at the expense of Slovakia’s people”.
