The incident
The incident occurred on the evening of December 28, when a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 737-800 was diverted to Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport (TRF) after the crew detected a hydraulic failure shortly after takeoff from Oslo-Gardermoen Airport (OSL) at 7:05 pm local time. The diversion followed after “a loud noise was heard,” the airline reported, according to a New York Post report.
The aircraft, registered as PH-BXM, was operating flight KL1204 to Amsterdam-Schiphol International Airport (AMS) with 176 passengers and six crew members on board.
Local media reported that smoke was observed coming from the left engine, and the pilots declared an emergency, saying they could not control the aircraft. During the landing on runway 18 at Torp, the plane veered off to the right and came to a stop on a grassy area. Emergency response teams quickly arrived, and all passengers were safely evacuated using boarding stairs. No injuries were reported.
KLM issues statement
KLM released a statement, saying, “Our passengers were transported to Oslo by bus last night and provided with hotel accommodation if required. KLM will send an aircraft this afternoon to pick up passengers in Oslo. They will be assisted both at Oslo Gardermoen airport and in Amsterdam.”
“KLM’s technical team will arrive in Sandefjord this morning to investigate the circumstances of the incident together with local authorities and the airport in accordance with aviation procedure, and retrieve the aircraft as soon as possible,” the airline added.
Accident investigation and recovery efforts
The Accident Investigation Board Norway inspected the scene and released the aircraft shortly before midnight local time. The airport closed after the incident, diverting flights to Oslo-Gardermoen Airport.
A KLM technical team is in Sandefjord working with local authorities and the airport to investigate the incident and recover the plane. The airline stated it will adhere to standard aviation procedures.
This incident follows other recent aircraft accidents, including a fatal crash in South Korea on Saturday and another in Kazakhstan on Christmas Day.
