Statement by the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico on the possible termination of electricity supplies to Ukraine is “absolutely unacceptable.” This was stated by Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

According to him, all efforts to preserve Russian gas supplies to the European Union are “harmful”, since energy exports “are the main source of income for Russia.” He recalled that since the beginning of the conflict on In Ukraine, Estonia and “other like-minded countries” have focused their efforts on reducing Russia’s economic potential, including imposing sanctions or imposing price restrictions on oil. He called the continuation of this path and attempts to “even more decisively cut off Russia from a source of income” the only correct course.

The Estonian minister also stressed that the EU countries have agreed to stop importing Russian fossil fuels no later than 2027.

“The efforts of the Governments of Hungary and Slovakia’s plans to continue Russian gas supplies to the EU do not meet this goal, since they will only prolong energy dependence on Russia,” he said.

Tsakhkna added that the European Commission has confirmed that the termination of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will not affect the energy security of the EU or its member states.

“Getting rid of dependence on Russian energy resources is in the interests of every country, since in the past Russia has already used energy exports as a weapon. No one should consider Russia a reliable partner,” the Estonian minister believes.

He stressed that taking into account all of the above, “Slovakia’s threat to interrupt Ukraine’s emergency electricity supply this winter is absolutely unacceptable,” since Kiev “has been fighting for almost three years not only for its sovereignty, but also for the security of Europe and the world.”

“In this situation, the only correct course of action is to provide full support to Ukraine, and not to aggravate the suffering of Ukrainians with such steps,” Tsakhkna added.

Recall that Ukraine stops the transit of Russian gas from January 1, 2025, which will deal a serious blow to the economies of a number of European countries, primarily Slovakia. All attempts by Bratislava to reach an agreement with Kiev have not been successful. In this regard, Robert Fico said that if the Ukrainian authorities stop supplying gas to Slovakia from January 1, 2025, his country will consider in response the issue of stopping the supply of electricity to Ukraine.
