American Skiers Are Rapidly Discovering Andermatt, Switzerland

Andermatt, Switzerland offers the perfect setting for winter activities.

At one time or another, all ardent skiers dream of a European vacation in order to test their mettle at some of the world’s greatest ski resorts. The recreational sport of skiing originated in Norway, which is considered the birthplace of ski resorts with the first recognized ski resort opening in 1908 in Holmenkollen. However, it was the Alps that became the cradle of ski resort development, with countries like Switzerland, Austria and France leading the way.

Switzerland continues its renowned legacy by offering skiers majestic mountain ranges, perfect for experts but gentle slopes can be found for all levels of skiers. Typically, skiers find a mix of snow types with a prevalence of dry, powdery snow due to the high altitude and cold temperatures of the Alps, considered ideal for most skiers, especially those looking for off-piste adventures.

Americans are flocking to the charming town of Andermatt.

With the largest ski area in Central Switzerland, cross-country ski tracks, winter hikes and an ice rink, the region offers the perfect setting for winter activities.

In many respects, Andermatt is the answer to recent complaints of “too many tourists” in Aspen, Big Bear, St. Moritz and Gstaad. The quaint Swiss mountain village originally served as an army base but was redeveloped into a booming ski destination, all thanks to Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris, that now boasts 110 miles of trails, 33 lifts and some of the deepest powder and best off-piste skiing in the world. In 2022, Vail Resorts acquired the majority of Andermatt’s ski operations, so Epic Pass holders have access to the slopes.

As a result, Andermatt is rapidly becoming the go-to European ski destination for American visitors, with a 70% increase in overnight stays from U.S. guests between 2022 and 2023. This winter, Andermatt unveiled a brand-new shopping and dining district featuring 35 retail units and 10 gastronomy locations. Among the highlights is the much-anticipated opening of IGNIV, the acclaimed dining concept by three-Michelin-starred chef Andreas Caminada.

Andermatt has become a venue for dynamic cultural offerings.

Thomas Rendell, chief marketing officer at Andermatt Swiss Alps, says, “Andermatt has seen incredible growth over the past decade, especially since Vail Resorts acquired the majority of our ski operations. This has truly elevated the destination to a global stage, resulting in an influx of visitors from the US. It’s no longer just a quiet alpine village. It’s Central Switzerland’s largest ski area with three Michelin-starred restaurants and the only dedicated concert hall in the Alps, making Andermatt a vibrant hub for world-class skiing, fine dining, dynamic cultural offerings and year-round events. With exciting happenings like the inaugural High Peak Festival in April 2025, headlined by Busta Rhymes and Timbaland, and the recent opening of IGNIV by Chef Andreas Caminada we’re creating an experience that appeals to a diverse audience of travelers seeking something fresh and unique.”
