The award-winning animated movie “Straume” by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbaložs was awarded the Best Animated Film Awards ceremony at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony this Sunday, the 5th of January.

There were five animated movies nominated for this award – “Inside Out 2”, “Moana 2”, “Memoir of a Snail”, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” and “The Wild Robot”.

The animated film “Straume” is a 3D-animated story about an individualist Cat who, during a major flood, is forced to leave his home and take refuge in a small boat with other animals. In order to survive in the new and uninhabited world of people, the Cat must change its habits and cooperate with the Dog, Capybara, Lemur and Bird.

The creative team of the film “Straume” includes director, producer, screenwriter and artist Zilbalodis, producer and co-author of the script Matīss Kaža, producers Rons Diānss and Gregorijs Zalkmans, sound director Gurvals Koiks-Gallass, chief animator Leo Silī-Pelisjē, music authors Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe, visual effects artists Konstantīns Višņevskis and Mārtiņš Upītis.

In early December, “Straume” received the European Film Academy Award in the category “Best Animated Film”.

“Straume” has also been screened in the Cannes Film Festival’s competition program “Special Gaze” as the only animated film. At the Annecy Animated Film Festival the film has won four awards, including the jury and audience award. In addition, the film will be shown in cinemas in many parts of the world.

“Straume” was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Upon receiving the award, Zilbalodis thanked those involved in the creation and distribution of the film, as well as emphasized that this is the first time that a film made in Latvia has been awarded the Golden Globe. The filmmaker said that “Straume” was formed by a very small, young, but passionate team in a place where there is no particularly large film industry. He made no secret of the fact that receiving an award means a lot to the film’s creative team.
