The monarch of Denmark Frederik made changes to the royal coat of arms so that Greenland and the Faroe Islands would be more visible on it, which was perceived, among other things, as a response to Donald Trump’s offer to sell Greenland to the United States. This is reported by The Guardian.

The monarch made a clear statement of his intention to preserve the autonomous Danish territory and the former colony as part of the kingdom.

“For 500 years, the previous Danish royal coats of arms depicted three crowns, the symbol of the Kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which was led by Denmark between 1397 and 1523. They are also an important symbol of neighboring Sweden. But in the updated version, the crowns were removed and replaced with more prominent polar bears and sheep than before to symbolize Greenland and the Faroe Islands, respectively,” the newspaper writes.

The royal court said that the three crowns, according to the monarch, were removed “because they are no longer relevant.” The changes, the king noted, were made after the recommendation of the committee appointed immediately after his inauguration on January 14, 2024.

It is noted that the changes were made against the background of increasing tensions around Greenland and its relations with Denmark, which continues to control its foreign and security policy.

US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated last month that he wants the States to buy Greenland, and Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede recently accused Denmark of genocide in response to an investigation into the forced contraception scandal in the 1960s and 70s. In his New Year’s address, Egede called for Greenland’s independence and the lifting of the “shackles of the colonial era.”

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is expected to visit Greenland on Tuesday, a local government official told Reuters, adding that this is a private visit and that he will record material for a podcast and will not meet with local officials.

Trump Sr. later confirmed the information about the trip on his page on the social network Truth Social, without specifying the date. He added: “Greenland is an incredible place and people will benefit enormously if and when it becomes part of our country. We will defend it (the island. — EADaily) and cherish it from the very cruel outside world. LET’S MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

As reported by EADaily, Greenland will seek independence from Denmark, its former colonial ruler. This was stated in his New Year’s address to the inhabitants of the island by the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, Reuters reported.

This statement marked a significant change in the rhetoric regarding the future of the Arctic island.
