The Troll gas field in the North Sea has achieved a historic production milestone by delivering 42.5 billion standard cubic metres (bscm) of natural gas in 2024.
This figure represents the highest annual production ever for the field and marks an increase of nearly 10% from the previous record of 38.8bscm in 2022.
Troll field supplies approximately 11% of the EU’s natural gas. The field licensees include Equinor, Petoro, Norske Shell, TotalEnergies and ConocoPhillips.
Equinor exploration and production Norway executive vice-president Kjetil Hove said: “With record-high production in 2024, the Troll field confirms its position as a pillar of Europe’s energy security. The field contributes to a stable gas supply for millions of households and is important for European industry.
“This milestone is the result of decades of targeted work to recover the Troll oil and gas resources in an efficient and sustainable manner. It is rewarding to be able to deliver such significant volumes of gas when Europe needs it most.”
The year’s record-breaking output is attributed to high operational regularity, the absence of turnarounds and efficiency-boosting upgrades including riser replacements on Troll B that have optimised production.
Troll A has been the primary contributor to natural gas production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).
In 2021, a major subsea development enabled the expansion of production to include the gas cap in the reservoir’s western section. The expansion was a major contributor towards the increase in gas production, 28 years after start-up.
The Troll B and C platforms also continue to supply significant volumes of gas, which are transported via Troll A to Kollsnes.
Additionally, recent upgrades at the Kollsnes gas processing plant, in collaboration with operator Gassco, have increased daily capacity from 144.5 million standard cubic metres (mscm) to 156mscm, playing a key role in achieving the production milestone.
Equinor gas and power trading senior vice-president Helge Haugane said: “The efforts to recover more Troll gas and increased export capacity clearly help ensure that our customers in Europe get the energy security and long-term perspective they need.”
