Protest sentiments are growing in Denmark against the background of statements by the elected American president Donald Trump about the accession of the world’s largest island to the United States.

In connection with the threat from Washington, a member of the Danish Parliament (Folketing) from the Socialist People’s Party, Carsten Henge, called on Moscow to seek protection. The politician posted the corresponding statement on social networks.

“In a situation of extreme escalation and tension, we are forced to take extreme measures and seek help from Russia to solve this problem,” the statement said.

Mr. Henge expressed confidence that the request of the Danish parliamentarians in the Kremlin will be heard and Russia will not allow Greenland to become part of the United States.

Earlier, Politico reported that the attempt of the elected American President Donald Trump to annex Greenland to the United States by military means would lead to the application of the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty on the European Union (EU).

In accordance with paragraph 7 of Article 42 of the treaty, the member States of the association must provide “assistance and assistance by all means possible for them” to the EU country that has become a victim of armed aggression.

As reported by EADaily, earlier the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, said that the islanders lack independence in conducting foreign policy activities due to dependence on Denmark.
