After the strategic cooperation agreement in the energy sector between Serbia and the United States, signed in Washington last September by Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić and the U.S. Under-Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, Jose Fernandez, the two countries will sign a strategic dialogue agreement this weekend.
According to Kurir, the document will be signed during the visit of the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard Verma, to Belgrade. Verma is expected to arrive in Serbia’s capital tomorrow after visiting Tirana and Pristina.
The strategic dialogue agreement document was presented to U.S. officials in Washington several months ago by the Pupin Initiative. It was well received by American officials and will now mark a new chapter in the relations between Belgrade and Washington. Vuk Velebit, the Executive Director of the Pupin Initiative, told Kurir that establishing this dialogue with the U.S. signifies that Serbia will, for the first time, meet the criteria of the “four pillars policy.”
“Above all, strategic dialogue is a diplomatic tool of U.S. foreign policy, and establishing this dialogue with Serbia means that the United States recognises Serbia as an important and strategic partner in the Balkans. This framework of cooperation implies regular meetings between the Serbian and U.S. governments, as well as specific topics to be addressed in the coming period, defined by this agreement. Just as Serbia has signed strategic agreements with China and Russia, establishing this dialogue with the U.S. means that Serbia will, for the first time, fulfil the ‘four pillars policy,’ which entails developing relations not only with Beijing, Moscow, and Brussels but also with Washington. This will be formalised over the weekend with the arrival of Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma, and work on agreed topics will begin immediately. I expect the agreement to take effect upon its announcement,” Velebit confirmed to Kurir.
He emphasised that the benefits Serbia will gain from this dialogue will be manifold, covering many critical areas and fostering fruitful collaboration with the incoming U.S. administration under Donald Trump. “The advantages for Serbia from the dialogue will include strengthening Serbia’s international position, increasing its importance to the U.S., and creating favourable conditions for economic cooperation, as well as enhanced collaboration in the security sector. We expect that the Trump administration will show even greater understanding of Serbian interests and that the upward trajectory of Serbia-U.S. relations will gain fresh momentum under Donald Trump, especially as the U.S. looks more closely at Eastern Europe, including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Serbia. This means that our country’s role will be significant for the Trump administration,” Velebit noted.
The strategic dialogue between the U.S. and Serbia will encompass several key areas, including economy, trade and investment, energy, environmental protection, technology, media, and regional and European political issues. Additionally, cooperation in defence and security, human rights, and the rule of law will also be discussed.
Among the countries that have a strategic dialogue with the United States are Poland, Greece, Egypt, India, Cyprus, Uzbekistan, and Oman.
