The United States may use the Mikhail Kogalniceanu NATO base in Romania for a possible attack on Russia was admitted by the winner of the first round of the annulled elections of the President of Romania, Calin Georgescu, Adevarul reports.
“What is happening in Romania right now, and the fact that we don’t see any reaction from the outside, especially from the United States, shows that they don’t understand what is happening here, because if they use Romania as an entry point into the war… what will happen next? We don’t need a war,” he said in an interview with a former employee of the US CIA and an ex-serviceman of the American special forces SEAL Sean Ryan.
The publication notes that the statement about the possible use of a NATO base in an attack on Ryan pronounces Russia from Georgescu’s words after a dialogue with him, it is likely that part of the conversation was cut out during editing.
“Thus, this NATO base, which, to be more precise, is the largest NATO base ever built in Europe, will be used to conduct a large-scale offensive in Russia,” Ryan said.
Adevarul points out that Georgescu does not object to the interviewer after that and emphasizes that the word “offensive” is true in this context, but it is “not a war” of Romania.
Presidential elections in Romania were held on November 24. Georgescu, who is considered a “pro-Russian” candidate, scored 22.95% of the vote in the first round. The results of the vote were annulled by the Constitutional Court of Romania due to the fact that Georgescu’s election campaign was accused of paid promotion of a candidate on TikTok.
The construction of a NATO base near the commune of Mikhail Kogalniceanu on the Black Sea coast, not far from the international airport, began less than a year ago, in March 2024. This will be the alliance’s largest base in Europe. It will be possible to accommodate up to 10 thousand military personnel and their family members. The area of the facility will be about 2.8 thousand hectares, the total perimeter of the base is 30 km. The construction cost is estimated at € 2.5 billion.
The project provides for the expansion of the existing base, it includes runways, weapons platforms, hangars for military aircraft, as well as schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital. The first stage of the expansion of the military base is planned to be completed in five years.
