Formula 1 | Spa Promoter Announces: “Liberty Media Wants Only Eight GPs in Europe”

Formula 1 Spa Liberty Media – The Belgian Grand Prix will continue to be part of the Formula 1 World Championship until 2031, although with some absences already established. From 2026, the race will not be held in 2028 and 2030, following Liberty Media’s strategy to introduce a rotation system for European events. This choice aims to reduce the number of events on the continent in favor of expansion into new markets.

Liberty Media and the Plan for Europe

Melchior Wathelet, president of the event organization, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the negotiations, while acknowledging the difficulties encountered: “We are very satisfied, these negotiations were complicated.

Formula 1 only wants eight races in Europe and it was difficult to get a long-term agreement”. Another relevant aspect concerns the increase in costs to ensure the permanence of the GP. Wathelet himself explained that the increase expected from 2026 will be limited: “The amount is higher, it has grown by 3-4%. We believe it is a reasonable increase, an understandable inflation that we think we can break even”.

Options for 2026

The future schedule therefore foresees a European presence reduced to just eight events per season. Among those already confirmed with long-term contracts are Monza, Silverstone, Red Bull Ring and Hungaroring. To these are added two street circuits, Monaco and Madrid. In 2027 the Belgian race will be regularly held, but the last available slot remains to be assigned.

Among the options still in the running are Imola and Baku, while Zandvoort has already announced the closure of the agreement at the end of 2026. The agreement reached allows the Spa-Francorchamps circuit to maintain a central role in the world championship calendar, albeit with some sacrifices.

The historicity of the Belgian track thus resists the transition towards an increasingly global championship with diversified stages.
