The Latvian government has awarded EUR 300 000 the team behind animation film “Flow” for the “Golden Globe” award received just recently, as confirmed by Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa after a meeting of the ruling coalition.
An additional EUR 150 000 will be provided to cover the film’s marketing needs.
According to Siliņa, the film is the real advertisement for Latvia, its film professionals.
Minister of Culture Agnese Lāce noted that everyone at the meeting agreed there is potential for the animation film industry’s growth in the future. Nevertheless, will propose its own vision as to how funding for the film industry for the development of animation films will be provided and will be allowed to be used. Discussions with partners will continue.
As LETA was informed by the Ministry of Culture, the award from the Cabinet of Ministers that will be provided to the team behind “Flow” is equal to what athletes are awarded for major accomplishments on an international level.
Financing will be provided from the state budget programme for emergencies.
EUR 300 000 will be provided to the film’s authors – film director Gints Zilbalodis, producer Matīss Kažs, composer Rihards Zaļups and the team of “Dream Well Studio” film studio.
EUR 150 000 will be provided to cover the film industry’s international marketing costs. According to Ministry of Culture, the film “Flow” should be provided with funding to cover international marketing expenses, as well as in order for Latvian films to be able to resonate internationally, to apply for international evaluation, festivals, as well as in order to find successful co-production partners and distributors, it is necessary to make international participation fees in film markets and film project development courses and other international marketing expenses.
The ministry points out that Latvia’s support for film-makers is not competitive compared to the Baltic neighbouring countries: in 2024, the state budget funding for the film industry in Estonia amounted to EUR 19 717 363, in Lithuania – EUR 10 053 000, while in Latvia – only EUR 8 468 807.
As previously reported, “Flow” has earned several international awards. Such an accomplishment has earned an appropriate award, said the prime minister.
The animated film “Flow” by Latvian film-maker Gints Zilbalodiss was awarded the Best Animated Film Awards ceremony at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony this Sunday, the 5th of January.
There were five animated movies nominated for this award – “Inside Out 2”, “Moana 2”, “Memoir of a Snail”, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” and “The Wild Robot”.
The animated film “Flow” is a 3D-animated story about an individualist Cat who, during a major flood, is forced to leave his home and take refuge in a small boat with other animals. In order to survive in the new and uninhabited world of people, the Cat must change its habits and cooperate with the Dog, Capybara, Lemur and Bird.
The creative team of the film “Flow” includes director, producer, screenwriter and artist Zilbalodis, producer and co-author of the script Matīss Kažs, producers Rons Diānss and Gregorijs Zalkmans, sound director Gurvals Koiks-Gallass, chief animator Leo Silī-Pelisjē, music authors Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe, visual effects artists Konstantīns Višņevskis and Mārtiņš Upītis.
In early December, “Flow” received the European Film Academy Award in the category “Best Animated Film”.
“Flow” has also been screened in the Cannes Film Festival’s competition program “Special Gaze” as the only animated film. At the Annecy Animated Film Festival the film has won four awards, including the jury and audience award. In addition, the film will be shown in cinemas in many parts of the world.
“Flow” was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
