Along with Cardiff City, Newport County and Swansea City, the Red Dragons are set to play in the Welsh League Cup, subject to FA approval.

The Welsh FA has confirmed plans to revamp the competition, with the aim of generating an additional £3million per season to support football at all levels in Wales.

It would see the four Welsh clubs competing in the EFL take part as well as European qualification for the winner.

The plans have received unanimous backing from the clubs in the Cymru Premier.

Meanwhile, Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Wrexham have all approved the proposed revenue sharing model for the competition.

In a statement, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney said: “This will be a gamechanger for the development of the game as we work to unlock the full potential of Welsh football.

“It will unite Welsh football, improve the game at all levels, and deliver meaningful societal benefits across Wales making our clubs and communities more sustainable.

“It will generate significant additional revenue through a revamped Welsh League Cup competition with expanded participation of the four highest ranked Welsh clubs that participate in the English football pyramid.

“This will be distributed throughout the JD Cymru Premier, Genero Adran Premier and grassroots facilities across the country.

“It also represents the spirit of collaboration and cooperation among football associations across the United Kingdom ahead of the home nations’ joint co-hosting EURO 2028.”

Swansea, Newport and Cardiff would also have the chance to return to Europe

However, the proposal was previously met with criticism in October.

The Cymru Premier’s all-time top scorer Marc Lloyd Williams even told the four clubs playing in the EFL to ‘stay in England’.

They now look set to compete for Wales’ fourth European spot in the future.

At present, the Welsh League Cup is contested by clubs in the country’s top two tiers, although Cardiff and Swansea’s under-21s appeared last season.

Swansea’s under-21 side were ultimately beaten 5-1 by The New Saints in the final.

The winners do not currently qualify for Europe, though, with Wales’ Champions League berth going to the winners of the Cymru Premier.

Meanwhile, their three Europa Conference League places are awarded to the league runners-up, Welsh Cup winners and a league play-off winner.

All four Welsh sides competing in the EFL have previously played in Europe, appearing in the Cup Winners’ Cup by winning the Welsh Cup.

Only Swansea have qualified for Europe through playing in England, though, after winning the League Cup in 2013.

The Swans went on to reach the last 32 of the Europa League the following season.
