A constructive dialogue between the three countries

The recent meeting of the Interior Ministers of Slovenia, Italy and Croatia marked a significant step towards greater cooperation in managing security and migration. Boštjan Poklukar, Matteo Piantedosi and Davor Božinović stressed the importance of working together to address common challenges, with the aim of ensuring a safer and borderless future. “Together we are stronger” was the key message that emerged from this meeting, which saw the signing of a memorandum for the implementation of mixed patrols along Croatia’s European border.

Removal of border controls

During the press conference, Poklukar highlighted the desire to remove border controls, stressing that this will happen only when the conditions are right. This approach aims to facilitate the mobility of citizens and promote cultural events, such as those planned for Nova Gorica-Gorizia, the European Capital of Culture in 2025. The police, he assured, will operate in a way that does not complicate the lives of citizens during these events, while maintaining the necessary security.

Countering migrant trafficking and terrorism

Another key topic discussed was the strengthening of measures against illegal migrant smuggling. Božinović provided encouraging data, highlighting a 60% decrease in irregular migrant transits in the first weeks of 2025 compared to the previous year. This result is the result of an intensification of police operations, which led to the arrest of 1.834 smugglers in 2024. Cooperation between the three countries and with the Western Balkans is essential to ensure a rapid exchange of information and to define priorities in trilateral patrols.

Towards a future without borders

The dialogue between Slovenia, Italy and Croatia is an important step towards creating a borderless future, where security and cooperation are at the heart of migration policies. The ministers agreed on the importance of working together to address the challenges of irregular migration and international terrorism, with the aim of ensuring a safer environment for all. There is still a long way to go, but the shared commitment between the three countries is a positive sign for the future of the region.
