By acquiring the da Vinci and Ion operations of its regional distributors, Intuitive Surgical (ISRG, Financials) announced intentions to increase its direct presence in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and San Marino. With additional conditions and regulatory clearances in process, the deal is likely to conclude in 2026.

The arrangement covers Intuitive’s agreements with firms handling distribution in the areaab medica, Abex, and Excelencia Robotica. “Having a direct presence in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and San Marino, and associated territories allows us to deepen our understanding of unique customer needs in these countries,” Gary Guthart, the Chief Executive Officer of Intuitive, underlined on the significance of the relocation.

Operations will combine under Intuitive’s European commercial division under the direction of Senior Vice President and General Manager Dirk Barten once the purchase is completed. Barten praised the work of the local distributors, noting that their help has been crucial in bringing robotic-assisted surgery all throughout Europe.

The business intends to use the change to improve ties with nearby medical professionals and increase availability of less invasive surgical techniques. With its da Vinci systems enabling minimally invasive treatments and the Ion Endoluminal System offering superior diagnostic capabilities in the pulmonary tract, Intensive has positioned itself as a pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery.
