METLEN Partners with HSGME to Enhance Raw Material Security and Sustainability for Aluminium of Greece

(IN BRIEF) METLEN and HSGME have launched a partnership to improve raw material supply security for Aluminium of Greece, focusing on sustainable mining practices and advanced technologies like AI to optimize exploration. The collaboration will promote local economic growth, responsible resource utilization, and environmental protection, while METLEN’s €295.5 million investment strengthens Europe’s autonomy in the Gallium market.

(PRESS RELEASE) ATHENS, 22-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — METLEN Energy & Metals (METLEN) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Hellenic Survey of Geology & Mineral Exploration (HSGME) to bolster the security of raw material supply for the historic Aluminium of Greece plant, while promoting sustainable growth in the aluminum and alumina sectors. This collaboration combines the strengths of both organizations: HSGME’s deep expertise in strategic mineral research and METLEN’s leadership in critical raw materials exploration across Greece. The goal is to drive innovation and support the sustainable development of advanced technologies that enhance the production and utilization of essential raw materials.

The partnership will focus on collaborative research into Greece’s bauxite deposits, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and resources between METLEN and HSGME. This joint effort introduces a groundbreaking approach to mining research in the country, blending METLEN’s industrial experience with HSGME’s scientific research capabilities. By incorporating state-of-the-art technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), the collaboration aims to optimize exploratory drilling operations and more efficiently identify valuable resources, such as bauxite. AI algorithms will enable the analysis of geological data with greater precision, reducing unnecessary drilling, minimizing environmental impacts, and driving down extraction costs. Additionally, these technologies will optimize the use of natural and energy resources, ensuring more sustainable mining practices.

Beyond the technological innovations, this partnership is committed to educating local communities about the importance of utilizing domestic mineral resources responsibly. It emphasizes sustainable practices that prioritize environmental protection and community involvement. By fostering transparent communication, the collaboration seeks to align economic growth with environmental stewardship. The partnership is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits, including job creation and long-term positive effects on the local economy and society.

The Aluminium of Greece plant has evolved into the only fully integrated production facility for bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminum in the European Union. METLEN’s recent €295.5 million investment supports this further development, establishing a new production line for bauxite, alumina, and Gallium. This investment, which will boost production capacity to 2 million tons of bauxite and 50 tons of Gallium annually, aims to meet Europe’s growing demand for Gallium and reduce dependence on Chinese imports, thus enhancing Europe’s strategic autonomy.
