Finland is among the slowest recovering air traffic markets in Europe, according to airport operator Finavia.

Finland’s 20 airports served 19.6 million passengers in 2024, a year-on-year increase of seven percent, according to airport operator Finavia.
However, it said that since the end of the pandemic, Finland is among the slowest recovering air traffic markets in Europe.
“Although the number of passengers at Finavia airports increased by seven percent last year, we are still 25 percent below the number of passengers in 2019 (26 million),” the company explained in a press release on Monday.
Finavia said that the recovery of Finland’s air traffic between Asia and Europe was being hindered by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the resulting closure of Russian airspace.
Lapland growth
However, airports in Lapland saw a passenger increase of 19 percent last year, which was a record high, according to Finavia.
About 1.8 million passengers travelled through the region’s airports in Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Ivalo, Kuusamo and Kemi-Tornio — in 2023 those airports served 1.5 million passengers.
Rovaniemi Airport served 948,000 passengers, reflecting a 29 percent increase compared to 2023. Finavia said the passenger figures in Lapland reflected high demand in the winter tourist season.
Regional airports elsewhere in the country saw a 10 percent increase in passenger numbers, amounting to 3.3 million.
Leisure trips grow

The company attributed the growth to the largest airlines adding routes out of the facility, adding that most airlines increased the number of passengers they served.
Finavia noted that the global increase in leisure travel and concurrent decline in business trips were also evident in Finland. The European destinations from Finnish airports that had the most passengers were Germany, Sweden, Spain and the UK.
Outside of Europe, the most popular destinations were Japan, the US and Thailand, according to Finavia.
