Television host Kathy McCabe, known for her PBS series “Dream of Italy,” has branched out and is ready to get advisors’ clients dreaming of the entire continent of Europe.
McCabe recently launched a new series, “Dream of Europe,” that follows her travel experiences from London, to France, to Malta, to Greece and the Greek Islands, to Albania.
“I’ve always just had an affinity for Europe in general, and I wanted to try something new,” McCabe said.
She took the format of “Dream of Italy” — showcasing popular places in new ways as well as taking viewers off the beaten path — and applied it to destinations in Europe.
The series starts off in London. McCabe needed a new theme song for the show, so she asked a friend who is a composer to write one. She decided to highlight its recording at Abbey Road Studios where the Beatles famously recorded.
“People don’t realize that Abbey Road Studios is alive and well, a seven-days-a-week recording studio,” McCabe said. “Many, many, many famous artists record there, movie theme songs [too]. But, if you want a really high-end trip, you can rent a studio too and play if you’re a musician.”
That’s one of McCabe’s goals with her show: To feature experiences people can actually do on their own travels.
Off-the-beaten-path destinations
The show winds its way through Europe, with its final episode taking place in Albania. She called it “an up-and-coming destination” and one she was proud to feature, as it highlights a destination that is a little less touristed.
“Last year was the year of overtourism,” she said. “I was looking for other places to go that people haven’t seen.”
Her other stops also include less-than-typical activities, like going to a farm in Malta and an animal rescue and pistachio farm in Greece.
When to book Europe travel: now
McCabe’s top tip about traveling to Europe in 2025 is one that “travel advisors know,” she said: “Book now. Book yesterday.” There is a favorable exchange rate right now, which offers travelers an incentive to get their travels on the books now.
“I think that travel advisors are actually more important than ever, because even I’m overwhelmed by the amount of information out there, the amount of possibilities out there,” McCabe said. “And I think something like a show like this can help people refine their [travel] ideas.”
‘Dream of Europe’ Travel guide upcoming
She will be publishing a travel guide on the “Dream of Europe” website soon featuring every stop she made during the season.
This season was sponsored Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Kensington. McCabe praised both companies.
“I think they’re both sort of at the forefront of understanding how content influences our travel decisions, and I’m really proud of that and working with them on that,” she said.
And just because McCabe has broadened her scope with “Dream of Europe” doesn’t mean she won’t be dreaming of Italy again, she said — she hopes to create more seasons of each show.
