Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed his former ambassador to Washington as the UK’s special envoy to the Western Balkans, as the government seeks to show more progress in its efforts to curb the flow of asylum-seekers via Europe.
Karen Pierce, who is being replaced as ambassador to the US by Peter Mandelson, will prepare the UK to host a summit in Autumn 2025 of European leaders and the six Balkans countries — Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. That meeting is intended to boost cooperation between the UK and those countries which are known to be used as a transit route for people-smugglers.
