If you have a job where you can work remotely, you might have considered mixing work with travel and seeing more of Europe on Digital Nomad visas.
Many European countries offer special visa arrangements to attract non-EU remote workers and boost local economies. A key factor in determining eligibility for these visas is the minimum monthly income requirement and, in some cases, additional health insurance policies. This isn’t true of all Digital Nomad visas—New Zealand has just launched one that has no minimum monthly income requirements.
Let’s look at Europe’s most affordable options for digital nomads, as well as a couple of countries that have high minimum monthly income requirements for digital nomads.
Spain’s Digital Nomad Visas: Recent Changes And Income Requirements
Spain has recently raised its minimum income requirement for digital nomads in 2025, making it slightly more difficult for remote workers to qualify for the visa. This is because the visa requirements link to Spain’s minimum wage, which was increased by 4.4% in 2025.
The monthly income requirement for a digital nomad visa is now at least $2,853 (€2,763), as applicants need to demonstrate that their earnings are at least 200% of Spain’s minimum wage, which now stands at €1,381.33 per month (or just under $35,000 per year). While this is an increase from previous years, Spain’s digital nomad visa still offers a relatively affordable option compared to other European countries.
Finland: The Lowest Income Requirement In Europe For Digital Nomad Visas
Despite its higher cost of living, Finland offers one of the EU’s most affordable digital nomad visa options. To be eligible for Finland’s self-employment visa, applicants must earn at least $1,260 per month (€1,220) or just over $15,000 per year. This is the lowest income requirement among the EU countries offering digital nomad visas, making Finland an excellent choice for remote workers seeking a cost-effective destination.
Finland’s digital nomad visa is available to non-EU citizens who are self-employed or run independent businesses. The low-income threshold and Finland’s high quality of life make it an attractive option for remote workers who can maintain a modest income while enjoying the benefits of living in a Nordic country.
There is one caveat: Finland can be a notoriously expensive country to visit, meaning that a stay on a Digital Nomad visa in Finland might require different travel behavior (fewer meals out, say) than in other European countries.
Montenegro And Albania: Outside the EU But Affordable and Flexible Options For Digital Nomad Visas
Montenegro’s Digital Nomad visa requires applicants to earn at least $1,446 monthly (€1,400). In addition, Montenegro allows digital nomads to stay for up to four years, which is longer than many other European Digital Nomad visas. In addition, participants may be eligible for certain tax breaks—the government is still finalizing the details.
Thanks to its Unique Permit residency program, Albania is an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads. Applicants must show proof of employment with a company outside of Albania and demonstrate they can support themselves earning over $10,125 per year (€9,800).
The visa allows digital nomads to stay in the country for up to one year, with the possibility of renewing up to five times. This makes Albania an affordable option for remote workers looking for a more budget-friendly European destination. With 296 miles of waterfront, stretching from the Adriatic to the Ionian seas, Albania is currently a travel gem because it offers so much value for money, providing all the charms and landscapes of Europe but without the hefty price tag.
Iceland And Estonia: High Income Requirement For Digital Nomad Visas
Iceland is an attractive destination for digital nomads with unique landscapes and climates, but it may not be ideal for those with lower income streams. To be eligible for the remote work long-term visa in Iceland, valid for six months, applicants must earn a minimum of $7,310 per month (€7,075)—the highest income threshold in Europe. In addition to the high-income requirement, applicants are considered tax residents during this period.
Estonia is another popular destination for digital nomads, known for its strong digital infrastructure. It also has a relatively high monthly income requirement in that the digital nomad visa is only available to those earning $4,650 monthly (€4,500). The visa allows remote workers—freelancers or employees of foreign companies—to live and work in Estonia for up to one year.
Romania: Not The Lowest Income Requirements For Digital Nomad Visas, But With Additional Tax Benefits
Romania offers a digital nomad visa that requires applicants to prove they earn three times the country’s average gross salary, that is to say, a minimum monthly income of $4,081 (€3,950).
In 2023, the Romanian government clarified the tax status for digital nomads, ensuring that those staying in Romania long-term will be exempt from income tax, social security, and health insurance contributions. This could make Romania an appealing destination for remote workers, as the financial benefits might outweigh the higher monthly income requirement.
For remote workers looking to live and work in Europe, Digital Nomad visa income requirements vary significantly from country to country. Spain offers a relatively low threshold compared to Iceland or Estonia, but countries like Finland, Montenegro, and Albania offer even more affordable options for travelers on Digital Nomad visas.
