Europe must be involved in peace negotiations for Ukraine, as lasting peace cannot be achieved without it, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) stated at the Munich Security Conference.
“Finland’s main message today is that Europe must secure its place at the negotiation table for Ukraine’s peace,” Orpo said.
“You don’t get a seat at the table just by asking or demanding — it requires having something to offer.”
The Munich Security Conference has gathered over 60 heads of state and 150 ministers, with discussions focusing on Ukraine’s peace process.
Ukraine’s sovereignty must be respected
Orpo emphasised that Ukraine must have the right to determine its own future, including seeking Nato membership and integrating with the European Union.
“Ukraine must move forward on the path that Europe has decided by opening EU accession negotiations,” he said.
Discussions on ending the war in Ukraine intensified earlier this week after former US President Donald Trump announced that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate peace negotiations.
Following this, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth stated that Ukraine’s Nato membership and the return of Russian-occupied territories were unrealistic goals. His remarks were seen as a concession to Russia before negotiations had even begun.
Orpo expressed gratitude for Finland’s unwavering support for Ukraine, attributing it to a shared historical experience.
Meeting with Nato chief
Finland’s foreign policy leadership met with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Munich Security Conference on Friday.
In addition to Orpo, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) and Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP).
According to Stubb, the meeting discussed how to achieve a lasting and just peace in Ukraine and what kind of threat Russia poses to the international system.
