If you’re not a fan of rainy days, a stunning island in the south of Europe might just be your perfect last-minute winter sun getaway.

The travel experts at Planet Cruise have scoured the continent for the brightest sunny spots for Brits desperate to dodge the drizzle. Though Alicante – a coastal gem in Spain – has been named the top sun-soaked spot, one particular island could give it serious competition.

Valletta, the capital of Malta, where the winter average hovers around 14 degrees and rain only disrupts around seven days each month. As Europe’s tiniest capital city, Valletta is the ultimate place to stroll about on foot, kissed by the gentle warmth of winter sunshine.

The entire city proudly stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, bursting with historical marvels at every turn. Taking the crown on Tripadvisor as Valletta’s most-praised attraction is St John’s Co-Cathedral, which houses not one but two Caravaggio masterpieces.

Admirers have left glowing reviews, with ‘Dorothy M’ posting: “Absolutely breathtaking. I am left amazed every time I visit this Church and its museum. It was a must do when visiting Valletta.” Another visitor, ‘Vehvari’, added their own praise: “Glorious cathedral. A must see place in Valletta. It was really beautiful and you can also listen to the historic tour.”

Nestled close to some of Malta’s most charming beaches, Valletta offers the ideal mix of sun-soaked relaxation and cultural exploration, reports the Express. The island also holds a special nostalgia for British royalty, being a beloved residence of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and highly esteemed by Meghan Markle too.

Malta is another European hotspot that has experimented with offering free public transport for its residents. If you’re on the hunt for a more budget-friendly option, why not explore the European city renowned as one of the most cost-effective spots for a romantic retreat?

For those who enjoy exploring cities by foot, there’s a northern English city that ranks among the best in the country for pedestrian-friendly exploration.
