Europe planning to seize Putin’s shadow fleet

European countries are considering seizing Russia’s secret fleet in the Baltic Sea following multiple incidents involving undersea cables.

A draft law is currently being prepared to allow the seizure of these vessels, either on grounds of piracy or environmental concerns, according to Politico, citing multiple European diplomatic sources.

In December, a power cable connecting Finland and Estonia was severed, with Finnish authorities quickly accusing Moscow of sabotage.

Russia has assembled a covert fleet to bypass financial sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Western nations have capped the price of Russian oil at $60 per barrel to limit Moscow’s war revenue.

However, Europe has struggled to crack down on this hidden fleet, which also poses a serious environmental threat.
