Patching, gluing or trying other methods to mend the existing government in Latvia would hurt the country, said member of opposition party Combined List Edvards Smiltēns in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.

He said he is confident the government must fall. He said Latvia needs a bigger government that is better represented in the Saeima.

He also said Latvia needs a government capable of representing the country’s interests in all formats. He also criticised Prime Minister Evika Siliņa’s planned remote attendance of the informal leaders meeting this Wednesday. It is during this meeting that leaders plan to discuss Europe’s security and support to Ukraine.

The Latvian PM will remotely attend the informal meeting of European leaders organised by French President Emmanuel Macron at 17:00 today to discuss European security and support for Ukraine. Before that, the Latvian PM’s agenda includes a meeting with the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, as well as a meeting of the National Security Council.

Lately politicians from parties of the ruling coalition have mentioned that a “restart” is needed and expected in the government’s work. There is talk of this “restart” and that it could take the shape of removal and replacement of ministers. This especially applies to the Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens from the party Progressives, as he has been mired in scandal and problems for a long time now.
