TotalEnergies has partnered Air Liquide to advance its 2030 goal of decarbonising the hydrogen used in its European refineries.

The collaboration involves the development of two projects in the Netherlands that will produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The hydrogen will be generated using renewable energy, primarily from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and RWE.

These initiatives aim to reduce CO₂ emissions from TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000t annually, aligning with European renewable energy targets in transport.

The companies have agreed to establish a joint venture, equally held by TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, to construct and operate a 250MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery.

The Zeeland project will produce 30,000t of green hydrogen annually, primarily for the Zeeland platform.

Scheduled for commissioning in 2029, the electrolyser is expected to cut the site’s CO₂ emissions by up to 300,000t annually.

TotalEnergies president refining and chemicals Vincent Stoquart stated: “Following the first partnership agreement with Air Liquide to supply the Normandy refinery with green hydrogen, and the agreements to supply the Grandpuits and La Mède biorefineries with renewable hydrogen, the partnership with Air Liquide takes on a new dimension and marks a new step in TotalEnergies’ ambition to decarbonise the hydrogen consumed by its refineries in Europe by 2030.

“By supplying these two electrolysers with renewable electricity from our offshore wind project in the Netherlands, TotalEnergies is leveraging its positioning as an integrated electricity company.”

The project entails a global investment of €600m ($627.3m), with requests for support from the European and national subsidy programmes. The partners will also pursue further funding for the initiative.

TotalEnergies has also signed a tolling agreement as part of Air Liquide’s 200MW ELYgator electrolyser project in Maasvlakte, the Netherlands.

This agreement allocates 130MW for producing 15,000t of green hydrogen annually for TotalEnergies’ Antwerp platform.

TotalEnergies will supply renewable electrons from the OranjeWind project to Air Liquide for conversion to green hydrogen.

The Maasvlakte project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027, reducing CO₂ emissions at the Antwerp site by 150,000t annually.

“TotalEnergies and Air Liquide partner for Netherlands green hydrogen” was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
