An American moves to Europe and notes the surprisingly clichéd activity she adopts as a way of life there

An American woman has shared her experience of moving to Spain and how she has embraced a new way of life, very different from the one she had in her home country. In her story, she highlights a cliché often associated with Spanish culture: flamenco.

Kiersten Brown, originally from the United States, moved to Spain in search of a more relaxed and authentic life. She describes how her experience has exceeded her expectations, especially due to the laid-back lifestyle and the cultural immersion opportunities the country offers. Her daily routine has completely changed, shifting from the fast-paced demands of her previous life to a place where she can enjoy a closer connection to culture, art, and gastronomy.

Flamenco, one of Spain’s most iconic traditions, was one of the first activities she got involved in. What started as a simple curiosity quickly became one of her passions. “I take flamenco classes twice a week,” she shared. For her, these classes have been a way to deepen her integration into the community and connect with an important part of Spain’s cultural identity.

A Shift Toward ‘the Soul of Spain’

Although flamenco is traditionally linked to Andalusia, it has transcended regions and become a national symbol of Spanish identity. For many people like Kiersten, who move to Spain, learning flamenco is seen as a way to connect more authentically with the country. While flamenco is often considered a cultural cliché, it remains a fundamental part of many Spaniards’ lives, both professionally and as a casual pastime.

Additionally, Kiersten highlights the warmth and friendliness of the Spanish people, who have welcomed her with open arms and shown great respect for her interest in their culture.

She also mentions other aspects of life in Spain that have surprised her and align with the stereotypes she had heard before moving, such as the love for siestas, the importance of family, and the social gatherings that shape daily life. For her, flamenco has become a reflection of her transformation, showing that true integration is not just about learning the language but also about embracing traditions and culture.

At first, Spanish customs seemed excessive to her—such as long dinners and extended afternoon breaks—but over time, she embraced them as part of her own lifestyle. Her story puts into perspective how clichés about a country, often seen as exaggerations, have real cultural foundations that can enrich and transform the lives of those who choose to make that culture their own.

For many, moving to a foreign country is a challenge, but for Kiersten, incorporating flamenco into her routine has been a way to embrace an essential part of Spanish life. More than that, she has found in it a powerful tool to feel truly connected to her new home.
