The entire East Link Project, which seeks to renovate the railway network in the east of the country, will reportedly cost SEK 799 billion (£52billlion).

While Norrköping’s old station will be transformed into a social hub, its new, elevated station will blend seamlessly into the public space, providing excellent rail connections for both residents and holidaymakers.

Computer-generated images show Norrköping Central Station sitting in front of an urban square.

It will also be in front of the old train station and the city’s historic centre.

The new square will be home to homes, hotels, workplaces and food and drink outlets.

There will also be green spaces and areas where seasonal events and activities are held.

It is not yet known when the new train station will open.

Other details, such as the destinations of its services also haven’t been revealed.

While most holidaymakers heading to Sweden visit Stockholm or Gothenburg, there are plenty of reasons to explore Norrköping.

Mattis and Niklas, the duo behind luxury luggage brand Carl Friedrik, have compared Norrköping to Manchester in recent years, thanks to its thriving cultural scene.

The pair said: “Dubbed ‘the Manchester of Sweden,’ Norrköping was once a thriving industrial hub, but today the city has a much calmer and quieter attitude.

“With three postcard-worthy promenades and the Motala cutting through the centre of the city, it makes for a great long-weekend destination.

“The city also has a thriving cultural scene, with music and arts events taking place year-round.”

The city’s former factory district (Industrilandskapet) is now home to trendy restaurants and an art school.

There’s also the Museum of Art, which houses a collection of modern artwork.

Meanwhile, there’s also the Abackarna, a riverbank walking trail leading to the Himmelstalund rock carvings, which date back to the bronze age.

Until the new train station opens, buses operate between Stockholm and Norrköping, with journeys taking two hours and tickets from £12 per person.

Buses also operate between Norrköping and Malmo.

Journeys between the two cities take six hours, with tickets from £26.99 per person.

Direct UK flights operate between London and Stockholm, with return fares from £27 per person.

Three train stations opening in the UK

RAIL travel is having a moment, with several stations being built across the country. And here are three train stations set to open in the UK…

Golborne, Greater Manchester
Trains last ran through Golborne in the 1960s, leaving the town without a direct service into Manchester. Buses and trams don’t run directly between Golborne and Manchester. But a new £32million station is set to open in 2027, providing direct links between the two once more.

Wixams, Bedfordshire
Wixams Train Station hopes to open by 2026 and could connect people to the new Universal Studios theme park hoping to open in Bedford. The £57million station was first planned 20 years ago.

Cambridge South Station, Cambridge
Cambridge South Station is set to open in 2025. The brand-new train station is currently being built next to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The total project is estimated to cost £183.6million with the two-storey station set to include four platforms, a ticket office and lifts. Once complete Cambridge South Station will provide links to central London, Birmingham and Stansted Airport.

And the new £460million Curzon Street Station will open in Birmingham – the first of its kind in the UK in 130 years.
