Luxembourg’s Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden returned reassured from a visit to Paris on Thursday after his French counterpart Bruno Retailleau told him that France is not interested in creating permanent border controls with the Grand Duchy.
Léon Gloden told RTL that France only wanted to carry out sporadic checks on national roads. The French and Luxembourg security forces have been carrying out joint patrols on major transport routes and trains for a year now. This co-operation has been very successful and there are plans to expand it even further, according to Gloden.
Luxembourg has expressed concern about Germany’s extension to its border controls. Just last week Gloden told parliament that the government will send a formal complaint to the European Commission about the checks being carried out on motorways and major roads between the two countries, which go against the spirit of the Schengen agreement.
Germany argues that border controls an prevent deadly attacks such as those recently Magdeburg and Munich. It has so far extended the checks until September. But the CSV-DP coalition rejected calls from some opposition parties in Luxembourg to take the case to the European Court of Justice.
Gloden also said that a bill is to introduce the previously announced installation of street cameras to recognise car number plates will be presented to parliament in the coming weeks. Luxembourg is the only country in the border region that does not yet have such a camera system.
