Malta will continue to support Ukraine when Malta’s term in the Presidency of the Council of Europe begins, Prime Minister Robert Abela stated during a meeting in Castille with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset.

Abela continued that Malta will give Ukraine the support it deserves, including by supporting the different efforts of the Council of Europe in this regard.

Speaking about Malta’s priorities upon assuming the presidency of the council for six months this coming May, the Prime Minister commented that the themes which Malta will focus on include the participation of young people in democratic life, the protection of children’s rights, the promotion of equality, the work against discrimination and violence, and the protection of the European convention on human rights.

The Office of the Prime Minister stated that Abela spoke of the importance of the Council of Europe and the values it upholds. It continued that the Prime Minister noted that Malta will serve in the presidency of the council in the same year that the country is celebrating 60 years since its membership in the organisation.

The Prime Minister said that the participation of young people remains a central element in a time when democratic values must continue to be renewed among new generations. The OPM said Abela spoke of how Malta has Vote 16 and the Youth Advisory Forum as avenues of youth participation.

On the matter of strengthening the rule of law, the OPM stated that Abela spoke of the role of the Venice Commission within the Council of Europe, and added that Malta has welcomed important recommendations from the same commission, “which strengthened the independence of the institutions in our country”. The OPM added that the Government of Malta has continued to push ambitious legislative reforms during which it has worked hand in hand with the Council of Europe.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, Council of Europe Permanent Representative Francesca Camilleri, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar, and OPM Head of Secretariat Mark Mallia were present alongside the Prime Minister.
