Enercon has secured a contract to deliver and construct 28 E-138 EP3 turbines for Iceland’s first large-scale wind farm, with a total capacity of 120MW.
State-owned energy supplier Landsvirkjun will partner Enercon for the project.
Covering 17km², the wind farm will be situated in Búrfell in the south of the country, 130km from the capital, Reykjavik.
The E-138 EP3 turbines will have a hub height of 81m, a rotor diameter of 138m and nominal power of 4.26MW.
The project continues a long-standing collaboration between Enercon and Landsvirkjun, which dates back to the construction of Iceland’s first wind turbines in 2012.
Landsvirkjun chief executive Hörður Arnarson stated: “We are very pleased to be able to build on this today. For us, wind energy is a sensible addition to geothermal energy and hydropower.

Construction of the new wind farm is scheduled to commence in late 2024, with site road development and foundation works.
The delivery of the first components to the Búrfell site is planned for May 2026, and construction work will begin in the second quarter of the same year.
Enercon central and northern Europe regional head Benjamin Seifert stated: “Since our first joint project, Iceland has been a market with considerable potential for us, which we have never lost sight of, and the enthusiasm in our entire team is great that we can realise this project with Landsvirkjun.
“This also demonstrates that the Nordic countries continue to play an important role in our further market orientation.”
In November 2024, ENERCON announced a significant expansion in Türkiye, with plans to install an additional 2.5GW of onshore wind capacity up to 2029.
The initiative is in partnership with Turkish energy companies Iş Enerji and Polat Enerji.
