A demonstration of the readiness of NATO forces is a powerful deterrence signal, as evidenced by the recent Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade in the exercise “Resolute Warrior 2024” in Latvia, said Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs during his meeting with Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly.
Latvian president’s advisor Mārtiņš Drēģeris reports that on Monday, the 2nd of December, Rinkēvičs met with the Canadian minister at Riga Castle to discuss mutual cooperation between the two countries, especially when it comes to defence and security, as well as the most pressing issues on the international agenda.
During the meeting, President of Latvia welcomed Canada’s military presence and the successful establishment of the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, where Canada is the leading country. “I would like to extend my gratitude for Canada’s leadership in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank, as well as leading NATO’s multinational brigade in Latvia,” said Rinkēvičs.
He also confirmed that Latvia will continue providing full host state support to the allied armed forces.
This Monday, the meeting of foreign ministers of the Baltic States and Canada in Riga is scheduled to discuss security issues of transatlantic cooperation. Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže (JV) will welcome the ministers from other Baltic States and Canada in order to strengthen the dialogue and cooperation in areas of common interest in the 3+1 format.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit of the Canadian minister to Latvia is proof of close partner relations with Canada as a trans-Atlantic ally that plays a major role in the security of Latvia, the Baltic States and Europe in general. Canada is currently in charge of the multi-national brigade in Latvia.
Joly will also take part in an award ceremony for Canadian soldiers, who will be awarded for their contribution to the mission while serving abroad. Soldiers will be presented with certificates, as well as awarded with a special NATO service medal.
