While the Irish nation is fixated on tallies, transfers and quotas, the new EU Commission quietly began a new term this week. Immediately, the 27-member executive faces a series of stark challenges ahead over the next five years – all of which will shape life here in Ireland.
Emblematic of all this was that one of the first official acts of the new Brussels regime was a symbolic visit to Ukraine for talks with president Volodymyr Zelensky. The new EU council president, Antonio Costa, and foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, visited Kyiv on Sunday for a show of EU support for Ukraine on their first day in office.
