Tourists on the hunt for a budget-friendly sunny getaway that’s merely hours from Britain and not as busy with holidaymakers as Croatia or Spain, need look no further than the hidden gem of Albania.
Perched alongside the stunning vistas of the Adriatic and Ionian seas, it boasts a breath-taking Riviera, complete with gorgeous beaches and secluded coves that could give those in Greece a run for their money. Indeed, some holiday-goers who have stumbled upon Albania are drawing parallels to pricier and more renowned vacation spots.
Laura Hewson, a backpacker who explored Albania last year, told the Express: “We were planning to go Croatia. But one of our friends who’d been to Albania told us [we should go there].

“They said it’s like Greece or Croatia but cheaper and a lot more beautiful because there are not as many tourists.. We’re actually staying at a four-star hotel with breakfast included for the same price that we were staying in hostels with eight [strangers] in a room in Italy and Spain.”
Her travel partner, Farrell Modd, noted that social media was instrumental in their decision to visit Albania, having come across several TikTok clips from travel accounts that flaunted the country’s spectacular scenery. Farrell said that the reality lived up to the awe-inspiring footage online and she was taken aback by the tourist-friendly environment.
She said: “It’s beautiful, clear blue water, lots of swimming spots.” Laura and Farrell visited a resort city of Vlore in November 2023, where daytime temperatures were a pleasant 19C.
The palm-fringed beachfront were reportedly free from tourists and the pair were able to soak up the sun in peace. The city itself was not short on facilities for holidaymakers looking for a good time – and all at a bargain price.
Dining out in Albania rarely sets you back more than £10 to £15 per head at upscale eateries, while those on a tighter budget can tuck into freshly made pizzas for less than £5. And let’s not forget the drinks – beers on Vlore’s main strip start from £2, with spirits and cocktails priced around £4.
Even flights from the UK won’t break the bank. There are no flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, however there are direct routes from Manchester to Albania’s capital, Tirana, available for as little as £30.
