On December 31, 2024, Bulgarian interior minister Atanas Ilkov and Romanian counterpart Catalin Predoiu flagged the ceremonial Giurgiu-Russe border crossing. At the Nadlac-Csanadpalota, the crossing between Romania and Hungary, a similar ceremony was conducted. Video from the event went viral across social media platforms as one stray doggo from Hungary shyly made its way across the borders, even as the officials cheered with claps. Per Help Hungarian Dogs estimates there are about 5,00,000 stray canines, with 2,000 dying every month in the country, which is also the poorest in the EU. The stats for Romania is a lakh more
