A total of 446 irregular migrants arrived in the European Union through Greek waters since the start of the year, according to a tally of official numbers up to Monday.
Of these, 315 were picked up in a total of six boats south of the tourist island of Crete. The migrants said they set off from Libya, the coastguard reported.
A further 131 adults and children crossed from the Turkish coast to the Greek islands of Symi, Chios and Farmakonisi. It was not initially known which countries these migrants came from.
The number of people brought to Greece by sea by smuggling gangs rose significantly in 2024.
According to preliminary figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), almost 54,000 migrants arrived in Greece on board small boats.
The majority of them were planning to travel on to Germany, Greek Migration Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos said.
